I’m currently working on my Brie Larson Captain Marvel illustration. I wanted to share some of my work in progress (WIP). In a previous blog post, I showed the pencil drawing. I’m using Prisma color in colored pencils and overlaying colors over each other to achieve a smooth, blended look. It’s been a bit of a learning curve for me since I’m not used to using colored pencils for my artwork. I’m having a lot of fun experimenting with different techniques and seeing how the colors interact with each other.
Normally, I tend to stick with pencil drawings or black ink for my artwork, but I’m enjoying the challenge of working with something new. It’s a great way to expand my skills and try out new things. I can’t wait to see how the final illustration turns out!

From Screen to Page: My Captain Marvel Sketch
I recently started a pencil drawing sketch of Captain Marvel, inspired by Brie Larson’s portrayal of Carol Danvers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). I really enjoyed the movie and don’t understand why it gets so much criticism. In my opinion, it was a fun 90’s inspired superhero film.
My current project is a pencil sketch that I plan to eventually color using Prisma color pencils. Although I have done some face color pencil sketches before, I want to complete an entire figure illustration this time. I’ve included a picture of the whole figure here, but I apologize that it’s a little light and out of focus. I’m not the best photographer, but I wanted to show what I’m working on.

In the close-up picture of the face, I feel you can see how I’ve improved in drawing the female face. Having developed a stronger style of drawing faces from my practice sketches, which can be found in some earlier blog posts. I did use some photo references from promo images of the movie.
I’m quite happy with the progress of this illustration, but I know it’s only the first step in my process. For this sketch, I used a .05 Pentel mechanical pencil, which helped me achieve fine details in the drawing.
I’m excited about this new illustration project and can’t wait to see how it turns out. I plan to continue practicing and improving my drawing skills, especially with coloring and shading. As always, I welcome any feedback and suggestions from my fellow artist friends and blog readers.
Here’s a lunch break sketch I did of Hela. She’s always been one of my favorite Thor villains and I really enjoyed Cate Blanchett’s portrayal in Thor Ragnarok.
1st drawing of 2018, Jean Grey in her new X-Men Red look
After Jean Grey’s latest resurrection she leads her own new team, X-men Red. So with a new life, a new team she’s going to have a new look. This was a lunch break sketch I did last week. I was inspired to draw Jean after seeing artist Jamie Fay‘s amazing rendition he did of her. Jamie posted the image of her on his Twitter and Instagram account.
Here is the inking to my character of Alcatraz. This was created for the 30 charterers challenge held every November. I created a back story where for this character named Alcatraz. He is a pit fighter who dreams of escaping the fights. The only way out he believes is to never lose. Eventually, the bosses will move him out of fighting and work for them outside as an enforcer.
This inking was done on the original pencils. On 9×12 2ply Bristol paper. I use a 102 nip tip pen.
I’ve been listing to the DC 52, a Graphic Audio Book for the past few weeks (when I’m on the bus or during my lunch). One of the main characters is Black Adam. I’ve really enjoyed the adventures with the Black Marvel Family. So I was inspired to pencil and ink this drawing of Black Adam.
For the pencils, I used a .05 HB mechanical pencil. (which can be seen in a previous blog post:Black Adam Pencils ). For this inking, I used a 102 nib pen and a #3 sable brush with black India ink. My standard inking tools. I have fun with this one. In the next few days, I plan on coloring it next. SHAZAM!

Inking of Skull – One Veritech Fighter from Robotech
A few weeks ago I watched a Robotech marathon and was inspired to draw my own Veritech Fighter. So I drew the Skull Leader! Originally Roy Fokker then Rick Hunter fighter in the Macross Saga. I finally got to inking it this weekend. Using only my 102 nib pen, I really like the way it came out. For this inking, I used thicker lines than I usually do. It gives it a nice solid feeling. Plan on digitally coloring it in the next few days too. so keep an eye out! -SHAZAM
Pencils of Skull – One Veritech Fighter from Robotech
A few weeks ago I went to a comic convention where there was a panel on Robotech. I was a huge fan of the cartoon back when it originally aired in 1985. The panel brought back great memories of why I enjoyed the show. I then discovered Netflix had the whole series for instant watch. So I had a Robotech marathon! Watching the show I was inspired to pencil the Skull-One Veritech Fighter, originally piloted by Roy Fokker and then by Rick Hunter. My plan is to ink this piece and then digitally color it. So keep an eye out. – Shazam!
A few weeks ago I posted a drawing I did of Bloodshot in the 90s. Excited by the announcement that Valiant Entertainment would be publishing comics again in 2012. I wanted to share this piece I did as a kid. I then was inspired to create a new Bloodshot drawing. I penciled this Bloodshot with a more lean and slick look.
Here are the final inks of my new Bloodshot piece. I inked over my original pencils, I’ve been doing this lately with my work. I used an India ink with a 102 Nib pen, #3 Sable Brush, and a Micron 0.25 pen. I modified the piece from the original pencils. His hair is now solid black and I’ve given the pants folds instead of leaving them solid black. I had a lot of fun with this one. I’m planning on doing some more Valiant characters in the near future. – Shazam!
